The Marlins traded a starting pitcher with a history of injuries for the second time in a week on Tuesday evening. A week after dealing Edward Cabrera to the Cubs for Chicago’s top prospect and two others, Miami dealt pitcher Ryan Weathers to the Yankees for four players, including three prospects rated between 15 and 23 in New York’s farm system. Outfield Dillion Lewis, rated by MLB.com as the Yankees’ No. 16 prospect, was the player that Miami particularly coveted. The Marlins asked for him in trade talks with the Yankees about Cabrera last month. Also acquired by the Marlins: outfielder Brendan Jones (the Yankees’ No. 15 prospect), infielder Dillon Jasso (the Yankees’ No. 23 prospect) and infielder Juan Matheus. Baseball America ranks Lewis eighth, Jones 13th and Jasso 26th. Lewis, drafted in the 13th round of the 2024 draft out of Queens University of Charlotte, hit .237 (.321 on base) with 22 homers and 79 RBI in 122 games in two levels of A ball last season. He can play all three outfield positions. MLB.com says the right-handed hitting Lewis “generates some of the best exit velocities in the system and attempts to maximize his at least plus raw power by looking to launch balls in the air to his pull side. His approach produces extra-base hits but also results in strikeouts. He does hang in well against breaking balls and changeups but will need to be more selective at higher levels. Lewis has solid speed and plays quicker than that on the bases. He has divided his time among all three outfield positions in pro ball, and he’s a decent center fielder, but more effective on the corners; with fringy arm strength, he may be best suited for left field.” Jones, drafted in the 12th round of Kansas State in 2024, hit .245 (.359 on base) with 11 homers and 69 RBI in 124 games at High A and Double A last season. He also can play all three outfield spots. MLB.com’s scouting report on Jones: “Jones has an extremely patient approach, rarely chasing pitches out of the zone but also taking a fair amount of strikes. A left-handed hitter, he makes reliable contact against all types of pitching. Though he’s not very physical and his focus is getting on base, his combination of sneaky pull pop and ability to lift the ball in the air could result in 12-15 homers per season. Jones has well-above-average speed and uncanny basestealing ability. His quickness also helps him cover ground in center field, where he’s a solid defender. With his range and average arm strength, he’s capable of playing all three outfield spots.” Jasso, a 22-year-old corner infielder and second baseman, hit .257 (.326 on base) with 13 homers and 76 RBI at Double A Somerset last season. MLB.com says the right-handed hitting Jasso “has a reliable approach at the plate and makes consistent contact to all fields. While he doesn’t produce high exit velocities, he does a good job of elevating the ball and should be able to provide 15 homers per season. He has success against all types of pitches and handles same-side pitchers well. Jasso possesses fringy speed and defensive range to go with average arm strength. He has seen most of his action this year at third base, while also getting time at first and second base, and it’s possible he could handle left field as well. He projects as an offensive-minded utility guy more than an everyday player.” Matheus, 21, hit .275 (.365 on base) with 66 RBI and 32 doubles in 123 games at two levels of A ball last season. Acquired in August 2023 from the Padres for Garrett Cooper, Weathers missed considerable as a Marlin because of a finger strain, a forearm strain and a lat strain. He went 7-10 with a 4.11 ERA in 26 Marlins appearances, including 26 starts. With Cabrera and Weathers dealt, the Marlins 2026 rotation to open the season -- health permitting -- is expected to be Sandy Alcantara, Eury Perez and three among Braxton Garrett, Max Meyer, Janson Junk, Ryan Gusto and Adam Mazur. The Marlins are very open to promoting top pitching prospects Thomas White and Robby Snelling in the early part of next season if they earn it. The Marlins will explore adding a veteran pitcher as a non-roster invitee to camp. This story was originally published January 13, 2026 at 7:35 PM.
