Black Hole vs. White Dwarf: China's Tianguan Satellite Captures Cosmic Battle (2026)

This process is predicted to result in an intense and violent burst of energy, accompanied by a bright, fast-moving jet. And this is exactly what researchers observed in EP250702a!

Associate researcher Zhang Wenda explained, "This phenomenon closely resembles a rare jetted tidal disruption event, where a black hole tears apart a star."

Researcher Jin Chichuan added, "The ultra-short timescale and extreme peak luminosity, followed by a soft X-ray 'afterglow,' strongly support the scenario of a medium-mass black hole ripping apart a white dwarf."

To date, over 100 tidal disruption events have been observed, most involving normal gaseous stars. These events typically result in electromagnetic flares that sustain for years as the star's debris falls onto the black hole.

Principal investigator Yuan Weimin emphasized the Tianguan satellite's mission: "To capture the unpredictable and extreme transient phenomena in the universe."

Yuan further stated, "The discovery of EP250702a showcases the unique monitoring capability of WXT. It not only demonstrates our ability to capture the universe's most extreme moments but also highlights China's significant contribution to global astronomical exploration."
