In an electrifying showdown, the second One Day International (ODI) between the Black Caps and India is currently underway in Rajkot, with fans eagerly following live updates.
Recap of Game One
In a nail-biting opening match on Sunday, Virat Kohli played a stellar role, scoring 93 runs to lead India to a four-wicket victory against New Zealand as they chased down a target of 301 runs. Kohli's impressive performance marked his 77th half-century in ODIs, though he narrowly missed out on reaching the century mark. India faced some tension during their innings, slipping from a comfortable position of 234-2 to 242-5, but they managed to clinch the win with just six balls left in Vadodara.
Skipper Shubman Gill contributed significantly, scoring 56 runs in a solid partnership of 118 for the second wicket alongside Kohli, who also formed a critical alliance with Shreyas Iyer, who added 49 runs to the total. Late contributions from Harshit Rana (29 runs) and wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul (who remained unbeaten on 29, including the decisive winning six) ensured that India took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
New Zealand's pace spearhead Kyle Jamieson was a standout performer, taking 4 wickets for 41 runs. Notably, during this match, Kohli surpassed Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara in international cricket run-scoring, becoming the second highest run-scorer with 28,016 runs, trailing only Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar, who has 34,357 runs to his name. Kohli, now 37 years old, has focused solely on ODIs after retiring from T20 and Test formats, alongside fellow star Rohit Sharma, who is 38.
Rohit made a swift start with 26 runs but fell victim to Jamieson's bowling. The crowd erupted in cheers as Kohli stepped onto the field, joining Gill to take charge against the opposition. Gill, returning from an injury and missing out on the T20 World Cup squad, initially proceeded cautiously but quickly picked up momentum, achieving his 16th ODI fifty before being dismissed by rookie leg-spinner Adithya Ashok.
Kohli’s quest for a century was thwarted when Jamieson caught him out at extra cover, prompting a standing ovation as the former captain departed. In the same over, Jamieson also dismissed Ravindra Jadeja for just four runs, and shortly after, he bowled out Iyer, raising New Zealand's hopes of a comeback. Meanwhile, India's situation worsened when Washington Sundar reportedly sustained a side strain while bowling his off-spin and had to bat lower in the order.
Before conceding, New Zealand set a challenging target by scoring 300-8, thanks to Daryl Mitchell's resilient 84, who defied the Indian bowlers after hosts opted to field first. Opener Devon Conway contributed 56 runs, and Henry Nicholls added 62, forming a strong opening partnership of 117. However, New Zealand struggled to build upon that foundation with significant partnerships throughout the innings. India's pace attack saw Mohammed Siraj, Rana, and Prasidh Krishna each claiming two wickets.
The second match of the series is scheduled for Wednesday in Rajkot, and after this ODI series, the teams will transition into five T20 matches leading up to the T20 World Cup, which will take place in India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8.
So, what do you think? Will Kohli continue to dominate, or is there more to come from New Zealand? Share your thoughts!
