2026 Tax Refunds: Why You May Get a Big Surprise! | Tax Code Changes Explained (2026)

Why 'Very Large' Tax Refunds Are Coming in 2026, According to Officials

Americans are set to receive the largest tax refunds ever in 2026, thanks to a series of changes made to the tax code under the One Big Beautiful Bill, according to Trump administration officials. This significant increase in refunds is expected to help families cover everyday expenses.

The Ways and Means Committee Chairman, Rep. Jason Smith (R-MO), cited an analysis by Piper Sandler in an early December memo, predicting that 2026 will be the largest tax refund season. While many changes will take effect in 2026, impacting the following year's returns, there are notable adjustments for 2025, including a higher standard deduction, a higher cap on state and local tax (SALT) deductions, an additional $6,000 deduction for seniors, no tax on tips, no tax on overtime, and no tax on car loan interest.

Adam Brewer, a tax attorney with AB Tax Law, explained that these changes will result in larger refunds for most taxpayers in 2025. However, the actual refund amount will depend on individual tax situations. The administration's approach has been criticized for favoring certain income groups over others. For instance, those earning primarily from overtime or tips may pay less income tax than salaried employees earning similar amounts.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent echoed these sentiments, stating that Americans will receive very large refunds in the first quarter of 2026 due to the bill passed in July. He estimated refunds of $100 billion to $150 billion, which could amount to $1,000 to $2,000 per household. However, not all American taxpayers are expected to benefit equally.

Analyses by nonpartisan think tanks suggest that the bill disproportionately benefits high-income earners and businesses. A Congressional Budget Office analysis revealed that the top 10% of earners would receive an additional $12,000 annually, while the poorest 10% would lose $1,600 annually, with cuts to Medicaid and food assistance. Despite the potential for large refunds, Brewer advises caution, suggesting that taxpayers should not spend in anticipation of significant refunds just yet.
